As Christians, we know that our God is a God of mercy. We use this phrases all the time especially when we are in need of mercy. But do we realize that it could work both ways?

Recently, we had cause to see God’s mercy at play in the life of one of our friends and as we were celebrating and talking about how the “oppressor” is now in trouble and possibly in more trouble for some time to come, this scripture immediately popped into my head.

Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles; Lest the Lord see it, and it displease Him, And He turn away His wrath from him.

Proverbs 24:17-18 NKJV

As I pondered on this scripture, it occurred to me that when we say God is merciful, we need to realize that it is in His nature to always have mercy. His first response is mercy, meaning if the oppressor realizes their mistake and cries out to Him for mercy, He will have mercy. Perhaps, that should be our first response as well, Mercy! On the other hand, if we mock our oppressors, rejoice at their fall or try to make them fall more, God will look on our pride, resist it and turn His wrath away from them. Mercy!!!

So God’s mercy can come either by the oppressor repenting and asking for mercy or by the pride of the oppressed.

Does this mean that we should not rejoice at our victories? I don’t think so, but I believe that we can rejoice at our victory by focusing our attention on what the Lord has done for us and not what He did to our enemy (oppressors) or how badly they have fallen. If we are to do it the perfect way, after rejoicing in our victory, we can turn around and pray for our oppressor. If nothing else, pray that they have a change of heart and return to the Lord.

But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

Matthew 5:44-45

Did you notice the highlighted words? If God’s nature is mercy, so should His sons and daughters. God desires to see everyone come to Him, it does not please Him to see a sinner die and that should be our desire too. One of the best ways to see this desire come to pass is to pray for them.

Even to those who by all human standards do not deserve mercy, God’s love is so deep that He always has an open door policy for them.

Note to self – As we go through life’s battles, let us never forget who the real enemy is.

We love to hear from you so leave a comment at the end of this page and share this post with a friend. Thank you!

Good morning, thank you so much for all the wonderful write up you two have been putting out here, most of the messages comes as clarity when I need them most.

Also please is there a way to change the subject of the weekly mail to what it use to be “life and becoming” instead of the wordpress that is showing now.

When ever i see “life and becoming” it rings a bell that I need to read up or save for later, unlike “wordpress” which have deleted a couple of times without opening thinking its a spam.
